has lambasted today that a no deal hard Brexit would reignite a campaign for Scottish independence.

Mr Farage told listeners to his Sunday morning LBC programme that independence was meaningless if Scotland remained tied to the EU.

He said: “If you believe in independence, you don’t want to be governed by Westminster or Brussels.”

The ardent Brexiteer pointed to the huge number of SNP voters who disagreed with the leader on the issue of Brexit.

The Scottish First Minister has been a strident pro-EU campaigner and threatened to trigger an independence referendum in the case of Brexit.

Blair backed Mr Farage‘s remarks, saying: “To me independence is not getting rid of one master to just get another.

“That is not independence. I want independence and I support the SNP, but I agree with you completely Nigel. I don’t want 27 masters in place of one.”

The Brexit campaigner praised “people like Blair, they are a huge problem from the SNP – there are many who are seeing through this charade of independence”.

When another caller said that she did not mind joining with “27 equal countries instead of one,” Mr Farage burst out laughing.

He said: “Equal? Are you having a laugh? When you have Germany leading the group. Smaller countries don‘t get a say.”

A Downing Street spokeswoman said in response to Mr Van Rompuy‘s claim: “We have always said the United Kingdom would continue to thrive in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

“But we are confident of getting a good deal – one that delivers for every part of the United Kingdom and takes back control of our money, laws and our borders.

“That is what this government will deliver.”
