, the former Belgian prime minister who led the European Council until 2014, has claimed that a no-deal Brexit is an “existential threat” to the future of the UK.
The former European chief predicted that a hard Brexit would lead to a swell of support for Scottish independence and could break up to the UK.
Ardent Brexiteer took these claims to task during his Sunday morning LBC phone-in show, as he destroyed the Belgian‘s argument.
Mr Farage has history with Mr Van Rompuy after his speech in the European Parliament marking the Belgian‘s appointment as the first council president went viral.
The former Ukip leader berated the newly chosen as a “nobody” who has “the charisma of a damp rag and appearance of a low-wage bank clerk”.
During his LBC programme this morning, Mr Farage acknowledged that he “can‘t stand the bloke” as he ripped into his latest “scaremongering threat”.
The Brexiteer told listeners: “This guy is a fanatic. He wants a United States of Europe, that’s what he believes in.
“People like him do not want Brexit and they will use whatever weapon they can.
“We have already had Barnier constantly talking about the border, warning about a return to terrorism – almost as if he was half-encouraging it!”

Mr Farage criticised Mr Van Rompuy‘s preiction that the EU could become more united because of the Brexit.

The MEP responded: “What planet are you on? Have you seen what is happening in Italy?

“I don‘t know of a more disunited time in EU history. Brexit is an existential threat to the EU, not Britain.”
Mr also claimed that the UK Government’s threat of a no deal Brexit was simply an “operation fear” tactic.
A Downing Street spokeswoman said: “We have always said the United Kingdom would continue to thrive in the event of a no-deal Brexit.
“But we are confident of getting a good deal – one that delivers for every part of the United Kingdom and takes back control of our money, laws and our borders.
“That is what this government will deliver.”
